Larry Laurent, Sr.

Mr. Larry Joseph Laurent, Sr., affectionately called "Coach", was born August 20, 1948 in New Orleans, La. He was the oldest of eight children to the late Rudolph Laurent, Sr. and the late Clara Robinson Laurent. Larry resided in his early life in the Uptown area of New Orleans onFirst Street. He accepted the Lord as his Savior as a young boy at Zion Travelers Baptist Church. During his adult life, he converted into Catholism at Epiphany Catholic Church. He attended F.P. Ricard Elementary, Carter G. Woodson Middle School and graduated fromSt. Augustine High School in 1967. When Larry was in high school, he had a passion for football which led him to be the quarterback for three successful years. He led his team to a State Championship during his tenure as the quarterback. Larry was awarded a footballscholarship to attend Cisco Junior College where he played from 1967-1969. He also discovered the love of his life during his high school years, his sweetheart, Dianne Reine Laurent. They were happily married and to this union two children were born, Larry and Nyja.Larry was a devoted husband to his wife, for 49 years. Larrys love for sports was very apparent during his coaching years with the New Orleans Recreational Department (NORD). He served as the supervisor and coach of several recreational teams. He won several championships and mentored youth throughout his years at NORD. Some of the players he coached went on to have very successful athletic careers, including his son. Larry loved to coach and spend time with his family. He also enjoyed sharing stories and mentoring to people throughout his professional career with the United States Post Office. He retired after 31 years of service in 2004.Larry leaves to cherish his memories, his beloved wife, Dianne Laurent, his son, Larry (Nikki) Laurent, his daughter Nyja (Robert) Staes, his grandchildren Durrell Laurent, Joshua Laurent and Nyla Staes. His brothers, Rudolph (Palmer) Laurent, Curtis (Gwendolyn) Laurent, Gregory Laurent, Kevin (Adrian) Laurent, his sisters, Shareen Magee, Myrna(Eric)Lathan, and Ashley Laurent, his loving Mother in Law, Joyce Reine, his two Brother in Laws and three Sister in Laws, Linda King, Matilda (Kenneth) Evans, Karen (Richard) Boseman, his Godparents, Yvonne Ellison and John Robinson, Godchild Stephanie Gottie and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
