Lavern Johnson

Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at High Noon In the Hallowed Walls of New Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church 2600 East Rosedale ~ Fort Worth, Texas Humble Servant Pastor R..A. Toliver, Eulogist Officiating - Pastor Eddie Brown Sr. The Loving Story of Duna On June 17, 1934 in the city of Rosebud, Texas, an adorable baby girl Lavern Johnson was born to the proud parents, Henry and Jewel Johnson. She was affectionally known to all who knew and loved her as Duna. She grew up in a loving home with seven siblings. Growing up in Rosebud, Texas she attended Wilson White Public School. As a true believer of God, she accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Independent Missionary Baptist Church (Rosebud, TX). A time to appreciate… In the 1950s Duna moved to Grand Prairie, TX with her caring sister Katie Mae Howard.  Later, she moved to Fort Worth, TX were her membership with Christ continued at Neighborhood Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Hogan. Shortly after, her walk with Christ grew abundant, with the acceptance from Reverend C.C. Carson at Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Upon the passing of Reverend C.C. Carson she was under the leadership of Reverend Lonnie Griggs. Uniting with New Mount Carmel Baptist Church under the great leadership of the current Reverend R.A. Toliver. As a child of God, she served faithfully in the culinary department at New Mount Carmel. With cooking on her heart, the friends and family never went without a home cooked meal. Don’t forget the love she had for her pastor Reverend R.A. Toliver, always having the red beans ready on the stove. Anyone was welcomed to her home because she met no strangers. The hobbies she had were cooking, family gatherings, especially planning for the family reunions (every year in August), playing volleyball, softball, and basketball. At the gatherings don’t let her high side and beat you at a game of spades. Being a Texan she enjoyed the sweet taste of watermelon and rooting for them Dallas Cowboys. Working was never an issue in the 70s, when she worked at the Meadowbrook Nursing Home. Other occupations included, Owens & Brumley   Funeral Home, Hyatt Regency, Lili’s Cleaners, and later retired from Agape Home Health Care. On Friday June 1, 2018 the trumpets sounded, she heard the masters call and peacefully transitioned from earth to glory with her loving family by her side. To her loving family… Duna had seven beautiful daughters whom she was blessed with and cherished deeply in her heart. In 2005 Duna found the joy of her life, Casino her dog whom never left her side. She was welcomed by those whom preceded her in death, her parents Henry and Jewel Johnson, two sisters and three brothers, two daughters Charles Etta Scott and Jewel (Women) Soularie, two grandsons Tommy Curtis (ET) Gentry Jr. and Myron Demond Golightly, and one great grandchild Jordan Curtis Franklin. Left to cherish her precious memories and await Christ glorious return is her beloved daughters: Evelyn Lee, Carolyn Golightly (Larry), Shirley Johnson, Deborah Thomas (Randy), Jacquelyn Smith all of Fort Worth, TX; one sister Katie Mae Howard of Fort Worth, TX, one brother Eddie Lee Johnson of Roswell, NM; eight Grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, the New Mount Carmel Church family, and the historical southside community.
