Sleater Sloan

Sleater Mae Sloan went home to be with the Lord, Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at home surrounded by her family. Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Community Missionary Baptist Church, 1120 E. Jessamine St. On May 16, 1931, in the small town of Montalba, Palestine, TX, a baby girl was born to James and Sallie Sloan, they named her Sleater Mae Sloan. She was the fourth of eight children born to this union.  She accepted  Christ at an  early age. She married (Charlie Benson, Jr.) and had one daughter. Sleater moved to Fort Worth and united with Community Missionary Baptist Church, and married (Ernest Burns),  later joined Elm Grove Missionary Baptist, then Glen Park Missionary Park for  (30 years). While living in Fort Worth, she became an entrepreneur, opening and owning her own hair salon. Later in her life she switched careers and  began working for and retired from Mrs. Baird's bread plant (downtown) after eighteen years of service. Mrs. Sloan’s passions were her family, helping others,  sewing and cooking. She loved her family. Anyone that knew her knew that her   daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren were the love of her life. She believed in the African proverbs, “it takes a village to raise a child”; she spent many loving years helping to rear her grandchildren and her four great grandchildren.  Who could know Sleater and not know about her award winning “Tea Cakes”, which she won several first place trophies and cash money  for. She would  enter those famous tea cakes in contests from Fort Worth to Dallas. Some of the contests she entered and won were held in convention centers hosted by KHVN Heaven 97.  Mrs. Sloan enjoyed the company of people. She would welcome the opportunity to be of service to anyone, whether she knew you are not. She was one of those individuals who never met a stranger. Sleater Mae Sloan will be greatly missed  and she leaves to cherish her memories, her daughter, Marie Love (Nathan), grandchildren, Crystal Love (Tony Culton), Christofer Love, four great grandchildren, Christian Love,   Gabriel Love-Russell, Gabrielle Love-Russell, Cassidy Love-Culton, God-daughter Brenda Bailey, sisters, Wyvonne Duncan, Pearl Fuller, sister in laws, Hattie Sloan, Carrie Sloan, a host of family and many friends.
