Cornellius Leon Wright

April 14, 1980 — June 15, 2025

Roanoke

Cornellius Leon Wright entered this world as a beloved son to Mary Denise Gairs and James Hodges. In 1986, he was blessed with a bonus father, Lawrence Barthell, who helped shape his upbringing in Miami, Florida, surrounded by a close-knit family.

Athletic and spirited, Cornellius explored football but truly thrived on the basketball court. His talent for the game opened doors to travel and education, leading him to Odessa College in West Texas, where he spent two years and welcomed his son, KeShawn Wright. Later, he earned a degree in Criminal Justice from Boston College, demonstrating his dedication to growth and learning.

A proud veteran, Cornellius served his country for four years in the military before transitioning into a successful career in logistics. He traversed the nation as a long-haul trucker, working diligently until his health no longer permitted.

Life brought him a divine connection when he reunited with Michelle Mabrey. Their love story flourished, culminating in a marriage that spanned over a decade—a union built on unwavering devotion. Cornellius embraced his role as a bonus father to Korbin and Maliah, and together, he and Michelle were blessed with their own son, Jonathan Cornellius Wright.

A man of faith, Cornellius was a member of Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Worth, Texas, and found spiritual nourishment in weekly Bible studies with his dear brother in Christ, John.

Those who knew Cornellius will forever remember his infectious laughter, quick wit, and love for life’s simple joys. Whether cracking jokes, playing games, or simply cherishing moments with loved ones, he lived by the belief that life was too short for anger or strife. His heart held a special place for children, and in return, they adored him.

With remarkable resilience, Cornellius faced renal failure head-on, undergoing a transplant and fighting courageously until his final battle. On Sunday, June 15th, he passed peacefully in the late hours of the night, surrounded by the compassionate care of the staff at Medical City Alliance.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Susie Mae and Robert Harris; grandparents, Fannie Lou and Monroe Wright; and his beloved mother, Mary Denise Gairs.

Cornellius leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his children— KeShawn, Korbin, Maliah, and Jonathan Cornellius; siblings—Lashawnia Barthell, LaCinda McPherson, Marquis Johnson, and Amber Warren; bonus sisters—Danielle Armstrong, Kerrianna Mabrey, and Alessia Mabrey; bonus mother-Evelyn Mabrey, and a dear brother-friend, Arthur Trader. He also leaves a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who will forever hold his memory close.

Cornellius lived fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew him. He will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit will continue to shine through the lives he touched.
